How to Choose a Shirt Collar — A Practical Guide

Classic point collar. The most traditional and versatile style. Works with or without a tie, in business or casual settings. Suits most face shapes and creates a clean, elongated line. A reliable choice when unsure.

Semi-spread collar. A moderate spread between the collar points — accommodates a Windsor or half-Windsor knot particularly well. Our most-recommended collar for men who wear ties regularly.

Cutaway collar. A wide spread that sits flat against the chest. Best suited to fuller face shapes. A bold, confident choice — excellent for occasions where you want to make an impression, less appropriate for everyday wear.

Button-down collar. The collar points fastened to the shirt with small buttons, keeping them neat with or without a tie. Excellent for smart-casual and country wear; less appropriate for formal business or black tie.

The collar should complement the occasion, the tie, and your face shape. We are happy to advise in store — it is a detail that repays a few minutes of thought.

How to Care for Quality Leather Shoes

A well-made pair of leather shoes, properly cared for, will outlast several pairs of lesser footwear.

Use shoe trees. Cedar shoe trees should go into your shoes immediately after each wear. They absorb moisture, maintain the shape of the toe box, and prevent creasing. This single habit does more to extend a shoe’s life than anything else.

Polish regularly. Apply a leather cream or wax polish every few wears. Cream nourishes the leather; wax builds a protective layer and creates shine. Use a horsehair brush to buff, a soft cloth for the final finish. Always match polish colour to the shoe.

Rotate your footwear. Wearing the same pair every day does not allow them to dry out between wears. Two or three pairs in rotation will outlast a single pair worn daily every time.

Attend to the soles. Have metal heel tips fitted before the leather wears through. Country boots and brogues should be cleaned of mud before it dries, and the welt checked regularly for wear.

We stock shoe care products in store and are happy to advise on what your footwear needs. Good shoes deserve good care.

Building a Shirt and Shoe Wardrobe

A shirt wardrobe should begin with foundations. The first shirt to own is a white formal shirt with a classic or semi-spread collar — correct for weddings, interviews, formal dinners and business meetings. The second should be a pale blue version: equally versatile, slightly less formal, and an excellent complement to navy or charcoal suits.

From those two formal shirts, the wardrobe builds sensibly: an Oxford button-down for smart-casual wear, a brushed cotton or flannel shirt for weekends and country occasions, a tattersall or check for field and sporting wear. Each should be chosen in a quality cloth that will last several seasons.

The same logic applies to footwear. Begin with a pair of black cap-toe Oxfords — the most formal leather shoe, correct for every occasion that requires one. Add a pair of tan or chestnut brogues for business-casual, country and daywear. From there, a pair of suede loafers or Derby shoes for summer completes a wardrobe that covers almost every event. Quality over quantity, always.
