The right hat and scarf are not just practical — they are a mark of a well-dressed gentleman. At F. Hazell Smith, we stock a carefully selected range of men’s hats and scarves that combine quality materials, traditional British style, and genuine warmth. As Royal Leamington Spa’s long-established mens outfitter, we have been helping gentlemen complete their look for over 120 years.

A quality scarf is an essential winter accessory. We stock a range of men’s scarves in wool, cashmere, and wool-blend fabrics — in classic tartan and heritage patterns as well as contemporary designs. Whether you want something for formal occasions or everyday warmth, we will help you find the right choice.

No gentleman’s outfit is truly complete without the right headwear. The flat cap is one of Britain’s most iconic and enduring styles — practical, stylish, and deeply rooted in traditional menswear. At F. Hazell Smith, we stock a fine selection of men’s flat caps, tweed caps, and peaked caps, chosen for their quality, craftsmanship, and timeless appeal.
At F. Hazell Smith, we believe that quality headwear deserves the same attention as the rest of a gentleman’s wardrobe. Our experienced team will help you find the right cap for your style and head shape, and every piece we stock is chosen for its quality and character.
A hat that suits your face shape looks as though it belongs there. These are the principles we use when helping customers choose.
Oval face. The most accommodating shape — most hat styles work well. A classic fedora or a well-shaped flat cap will look particularly balanced. Avoid styles so wide-brimmed that they overpower your natural proportions.
Round face. Choose hats with height — a taller crown creates the impression of length and slims the face. A fedora with a centre-creased crown works well. Avoid very low, wide-brimmed styles which emphasise roundness.
Square face. Softer shapes work best — curved crowns and medium-width brims take the edge off a stronger jaw and brow. A trilby or rounded-crown flat cap in a softer tweed is a good choice. Avoid very structured, angular styles.
Long or narrow face. Wider brims and lower crowns help broaden the visual impression of the face. A wide-brimmed fedora or a generously sized flat cap suits a longer face well. Avoid tall, narrow crowns which exaggerate length.
The best advice we can give is to try several styles. A hat looks and feels different once it is on your head, and instinct often settles the matter. Our staff are happy to assist and offer an honest opinion.
A quality wool or cashmere scarf is a long-term investment that repays proper care.
Hand wash or use a wool cycle. Most quality wool and cashmere scarves should be hand washed in cool water with a gentle detergent — or machine washed on a delicate wool cycle at 30 degrees or below. The cooler and gentler the wash, the better.
Never wring or tumble dry. Press gently between clean towels to remove excess water, then lay flat on a fresh towel to dry naturally. Cashmere in particular should never be hung to dry — the weight of wet fibres stretches the fabric out of shape.
Fold, do not hang. Wool and cashmere scarves should be folded and stored flat. Hanging puts continuous pressure on the fibres and causes them to stretch. Fold in thirds and store in a drawer or on a shelf.
De-pill carefully. Pilling is a natural characteristic of wool and cashmere — not a sign of poor quality. A cashmere comb or fabric shaver, used gently, removes pills without damaging the scarf. Do not pull pills off by hand.
With proper care, a quality wool scarf will last many years and soften beautifully with each wash. Cashmere becomes noticeably finer and softer over time.
We carry a full range of traditional British headwear including flat caps in tweed and wool, trilbies, fedoras and country hats. Brands change seasonally, but we always hold a good selection of quality headwear suitable for everyday wear and formal occasions. Visit us in store to see what we currently have available.
Flat caps are sized by head circumference in centimetres or standard sizes (S, M, L, XL). We stock multiple sizes in most styles and our staff can measure you in store to ensure a proper fit. A correctly fitted cap sits level on the head without gripping or riding up.
