Men’s Accessories — Bow Ties, Cufflinks, Wallets & More

The accessories are where a gentleman makes his mark. The suit, the shirt and the shoes can be impeccable — but it is the bow tie, the cufflinks, the pocket square and the leather wallet that tell you something about the man. At F. Hazell Smith — Leamington Spa’s gentlemen’s outfitter since 1902 — we have stocked men’s accessories and finishing pieces for over 120 years. We understand their importance in a way that a general department store simply cannot.

Men’s Bow Ties & Neckwear

We carry a range of men’s bow ties for every formal occasion — self-tie and pre-tied, in silk, wool and cotton, in classic black and bolder colours and patterns. We also hold a selection of classic and club ties, woven silk ties and country wool ties. Our staff can demonstrate how to tie a self-tie bow, which remains the only acceptable option with a dinner jacket.

Cufflinks, Pocket Squares & Formal Accessories

A well-chosen pair of cufflinks is one of the most enduring gifts a man can receive. We hold a curated selection of silver, enamel and novelty cufflinks suitable for formal occasions and gifts. Our pocket square range covers cotton, linen and silk in plain whites, neat folds and more expressive patterns — the accessories that finish a breast pocket with genuine intention.

Wallets, Belts, Braces & Leather Goods

Quality leather wallets, braces, belts and shoe care products round out our accessories range. These are practical pieces chosen for longevity — the wallet that will last ten years, the braces that will outlive the suit they support. We also stock personal grooming accessories for the man who takes the same care over his appearance as his wardrobe.

Men’s Gifts — Leamington Spa’s Finest Gift Shop for Gentlemen

Our accessories range makes one of the finest gift options in Leamington Spa for the man who is genuinely difficult to buy for. A set of cufflinks, a silk pocket square, a pair of fine leather gloves, a cashmere scarf — these are gifts opened with real pleasure. We are happy to advise and wrap in store. We serve gift buyers from across Warwickshire, including Warwick, Kenilworth, Stratford-upon-Avon and Coventry.

Yes — our accessories department is one of Leamington Spa’s best sources of gifts for men. Cufflinks, silk ties, cashmere scarves, leather wallets and pocket squares all make excellent gifts. We can advise and gift-wrap in store.

What is the difference between a self-tie and pre-tied bow tie?

A self-tie bow tie is tied by hand and produces a slightly imperfect, natural knot — the mark of a well-dressed gentleman. A pre-tied bow tie is a clip-on with a fixed knot. For formal occasions such as black tie dinners, a self-tie is always preferred. Our staff can show you how to tie one in store.

Do you stock cufflinks in Leamington Spa?

We carry a curated selection of silver, enamel and novelty cufflinks suitable for formal occasions, gifts and everyday wear with a double-cuff shirt. Visit us in store to browse the full range.

How to Tie a Bow Tie — Step by Step

A self-tied bow tie is always preferable to a pre-tied one. The slight imperfection of a hand-tied bow is part of its character — it signals that the wearer has taken the trouble to do it properly.

Begin with the bow tie flat around your neck, under the collar. The right end should hang approximately an inch lower than the left. Cross the longer right end over the left and pull it through from underneath, as if beginning a shoelace. Pull snug but not tight.

Fold the left end horizontally to form the front bow shape. Hold it across the collar. Take the right end and drop it down over the middle of the folded bow. Then fold the right end back on itself to form a second bow shape and push it through the loop behind the first — as with a shoelace.

Pull both folded ends gently outwards to tighten. The bow will look imperfect — that is correct. Adjust by pulling the folded ends or loose ends to balance the shape. A bow tie should look as though a gentleman tied it, not a machine. The slight asymmetry is the point.

If you would like us to demonstrate in store, we are very happy to do so. It takes most gentlemen two or three attempts before it becomes straightforward.

Choosing the Right Pocket Square

The flat fold. One straight edge showing above the pocket. Clean, formal, understated. Right for business suits and formal occasions. Works in both white cotton and silk.

The puff fold. The square gathered with the folded side tucked into the pocket, leaving a soft, rounded edge. Less formal, works well with a relaxed lounge suit or blazer. Choose a silk or fine cotton in a colour that picks up a detail from the tie or shirt.

The rules on matching. The pocket square should never match the tie exactly — that looks contrived. Instead, echo a colour without replicating it. A navy tie with a white pocket square works perfectly. White always works, with everything.

Fabric. White cotton is the most versatile and formal — correct for weddings, business and black tie. Silk offers colour and pattern for less formal occasions. Wool and linen work particularly well with tweed jackets.

We carry a wide selection in store. If you are unsure which fold or fabric suits the occasion, bring your jacket in and we will help you choose.
